Cyclades islands

Syros island extends on 86 km² with approximately 20.000 inhabitants. The island comprises cities including Ermoupoli and Ano Syros.

Ermoupoli is the capital of the Cyclades. It is a city which was of great importance by the past, in the 19th its port developed much more than Pireus.
Today Syros is still an important centre for the trade, equipped with important developed cultural life and shipbuilding yards.
Ermoupoli, the "queen of Cyclades", east builds in a natural amphitheatre, with neo-classic buildings, old manors and white houses. The main place has its particular charm. There are many splendid churches. Its archaeological museum preserves interesting discoveries and its public library contains a number of interesting and rare editions.
The district of the city called Vaporia, was where the captains in the merchant navy resided, in neo-classic manors.

Ano Syros is the second city of the island, built by the Venetian at the beginning of the 13th century on the hill of San Giorgio, in the North-West of Hermoupolis. The city preserved its medieval atmosphere. Many stairs go to the top of the city. The catholic basilica of San Giorgio dominates Ano Syros, where one can appreciate a panoramic view of the close islands : Tinos, Delos, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos.
