In the heart of Gortynia: Dimitsana, Stemnitsa and the Lousios Gorge
In the heart of mountainous Arcadia, Dimitsana and Stemnitsa overlook the deep Lousios Gorge, in one of the most attractive areas of the interior Peloponnese. Stone villages, forests, monasteries clinging to cliffs and ancient remains can be discovered along old paths now integrated into the Menalon Trail. This ensemble thus combines heritage, hiking and mountain landscapes in a relatively compact territory.
Dimitsana, historic village of Arcadia
Built at around 1,000 m altitude above the Lousios valley, Dimitsana preserves a remarkable ensemble of stone houses, paved alleys, churches and traditional mansions. A few remains integrated into modern constructions recall that the site was already occupied in Antiquity, probably by the Arcadian city of Teuthis.
From the 18th century, the force of the Lousios waters powered flour mills, tanneries, fulling mills and above all gunpowder mills. This activity took on particular importance during the Greek War of Independence of 1821, when Dimitsana supplied gunpowder to the insurgents. The Open-Air Water Power Museum★ now recreates the operation of several of these pre-industrial installations. The historic library of Dimitsana, heir to a school founded in the 18th century, is another testimony to the intellectual role of the small town.
Stemnitsa, stone and artisanal tradition
About ten kilometres to the south, Stemnitsa is built in terraces at around 1,080 m altitude on the slopes of Mainalon. Classified among the traditional villages, the town is distinguished by its stone houses, old mansions, fountains and churches. Stemnitsa also has a long tradition of goldsmithing and silversmithing, perpetuated today by its specialised school and recalled in its ethnographic collections.
The Lousios Gorge and its monasteries
Between the two villages, the Lousios cuts into a wooded gorge★ bordered by high limestone walls. The area is protected both for its environment and its archaeological heritage. Its cliffs, difficult to access, attracted hermits and religious communities very early on, giving rise to several of the most spectacular monasteries in Arcadia.
The monastery of Timios Prodromos seems almost suspended in a cavity of the cliff above the river. On the opposite slope, the old monastery of Philosophou, whose catholicon dates back to the 10th century, preserves its remains at the bottom of a narrow rock shelter; the new monastery, founded at the end of the 17th century, is located a little further away. Trails connect these establishments through the gorge.
At the southern exit of the Lousios, ancient Gortys adds an ancient dimension to the itinerary. The city notably had an important sanctuary of Asclepius and thermal installations whose remains survive near the river. The site is now one of the main access points to the paths crossing the gorge.
The most representative hike follows part of the Menalon Trail between Stemnitsa and Dimitsana: about 12.5 km through forests, old mule tracks, monasteries and the banks of the Lousios. Without necessarily covering the entire route, several access points allow combining villages, short hikes and visits to the monasteries. With Dimitsana as the main accommodation centre and Stemnitsa as another charming base, the area easily deserves one to two days of discovery.
