Greece: travel and discovery
Discover Greece and plan your itinerary, between regions, islands, cities and archaeological sites, with travel tips, maps and info
Greece carries a heritage whose influence few countries can measure. It was in its ancient cities that democracy, philosophy, theatre and artistic and architectural forms that deeply marked European culture developed. Temples, theatres, sanctuaries and ancient cities still preserve traces of it today, extended by nearly two millennia of Byzantine, medieval and modern history.
Beyond this historical wealth, its ruins and its many archaeological sites, Greece offers a profoundly Mediterranean territory, shaped by mountain and sea, fragmented into peninsulas, gulfs and hundreds of islands. Yet its landscapes vary considerably, from the mineral reliefs of the Cyclades to the wooded mountains and gorges of the mainland, by way of the olive groves of the Peloponnese, the stone villages, the whitewashed houses and blue domes of the islands, and the harbours and coasts that are sometimes almost deserted. The sea is never very far away.
Between history, landscapes, sea, culture and way of life, Greece is discovered as much through its great sites as through its paths, its villages and encounters with a land that has remained profoundly linked to its past.
